What And Where Is The Prostate Gland
What is the prostate gland?
The prostate gland is part of the male reproductive system. Semen is composed of sperm and seminal fluid. While the sperm is produced by the testicles, the majority of the seminal fluid is produced by two Seminal Vesicles, the rest, up to one third, is made by the prostate gland. The prostate is an exocrine gland. It's main function is to store and secrete a clear fluid. This fluid is generally composed of simple sugars, zinc, citric acid and some, although very small amounts, various proteins. One being a Prostate-Specific Antigen. To work properly, the prostate needs male hormones. The main one being testosterone, produced mainly by the testicles.
Where is the prostate gland?
The prostate gland sits just below the bladder surrounding the Urethra. In a healthy male, the prostate gland is about the size and shape of a large walnut.
